A family-owned fixture on Thurman Avenue since 1981, in the brick-and-cobblestone heart of German Village. Four decades on, it still looks the way it did on day one — and there's still a line out the door every weekend.

Our hand-carved little guardian sits right on the bench out front, a whole breakfast painted across his hat — eggs, bacon, biscuits, sausage, a steaming mug. First-timers always stop for a photo. You should too.

There's a thirty-minute wait, and for good reason. Talking to the locals, I'm told: if you're not here at 8, you wait. I don't mind — this is where the first cup of Sunday-morning Maxwell House starts my day. I ordered two eggs and toast, added mushrooms and onions to my cheesy eggs, and was offered, to my surprise, white, wheat, sourdough, rye, English muffins… I chose an English muffin, and I'm sure the waitress had more in the arsenal. Why would you waste $15 at Waffle House when there are places like German Village?
